Old One Stayed1 Peter 1:18

The Sharpness That Came From My Mother

This message is for freedom from a sharpness with your own daughter that you recognize instantly because you grew up under it

It is four words long and it has a particular downward turn at the end of it.

"Well, you would know."

Her mother said it. Her mother said it for fifty years, at kitchen tables and over telephones and once, memorably, in a doctor's waiting room, and it was never quite an insult and it was never anything you could take up with her, and every woman in that family knew exactly what it meant and none of them could have explained it to an outsider.

She heard it come out of her own mouth on a Tuesday in March, at seventy, in her own kitchen, at her daughter, about a curtain rail.

A curtain rail. That is the part she has not been able to get past. Her daughter had said something perfectly ordinary about the height of it, and out it came, four words with the turn on the end, and she watched it land, and she saw her own daughter's face do the exact thing her own face used to do.

Her daughter said, "Right," and went and put the kettle on, and they talked about something else within about forty seconds, and it was a nice afternoon after that. It genuinely was.

She has thought about it every day since. It has been eleven weeks.

Her mother has been dead for nineteen years and she loved her. That has to be said and she would insist on it. Her mother was funny and generous and worked herself into the ground for five children and made a joke at her own funeral, in a note, that people still repeat.

And her mother handed her four words with a turn on the end, without meaning to, and she has been carrying them for seventy years, and eleven weeks ago she handed them on.

That is the whole of it. She is not in despair about it. She is seventy years old and she is not given to dramatics.

But there is a sentence that has arrived and taken up residence, and the sentence is: it goes down the line, and I am the one who passed it on.

The Sharpness That Came From My Mother

The line is not a bloodline

I want to say the thing about your mother first, carefully, because you have already braced to defend her and you do not have to.

Nothing here indicts her. She was funny and generous and she wore herself out for five children and she made a joke in a note at her own funeral, and none of that is diminished by four words with a turn on the end. Both are true at once. That is what people are.

What she handed you was not her character. It was a manner, learned in some kitchen before you were born by a girl who needed it, and passed along the way manners are passed, without a decision by anybody.

And Scripture has a word for exactly this, and it is worth noticing how specific it is.

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers.1 Peter 1:18

Received by tradition from your fathers. Peter is not talking about sin in general there. He is talking about the particular things a person inherits: the way of speaking, the way of managing, the handed-down manner that arrives before anybody chooses it.

And he says you were redeemed from it. Not from sin only. From the inheritance.

You have been redeemed out of what was handed to you, and that is not a comfort for a woman at seventy with a curtain rail on her conscience, it is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the reason it is landing on the eleven weeks rather than on your fifty years of knowing that verse.

Now let me go at the sentence, because it is the thing doing damage.

It goes down the line, and I am the one who passed it on.

That sentence has two halves and both of them need answering.

The first half says the thing travels by descent, automatically, like an eye color. It does not. It travels by proximity and repetition, and it is therefore interruptible, and it has already been interrupted in your family once, by you, thousands of times, on all the days you did not say it.

You are not a carrier of something inevitable. Scripture says the redemption is from the tradition received from the fathers, and the Spirit of God is the one who applied it, and a manner that comes out once in eleven weeks in a woman of seventy is not a bloodline. It is a residue.

The second half says you are the one who passed it on. Once. About a curtain rail. To a woman who said "Right," put the kettle on, and had a nice afternoon with you.

I want to sit on that for a second, because I think you have skipped past it.

Your daughter did not do what you used to do. She did not carry it for a week. She said "Right," and made tea, and stayed. Somewhere between your mother's kitchen and yours, something changed in how that four-word sentence lands, and it did not change by itself.

You have already broken most of it and did not notice, because you were watching for the piece that survived.

And here is the last of it. You are redeemed from what was handed down, and the redeeming was not done with silver or gold. The word says so and the Spirit is the seal on it, and the cost of getting a seventy-year-old woman out from under her own mother's four words was paid by somebody else entirely, a long time ago, and there is nothing left owing on it in March or in any other month.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it does not ask you to speak to your daughter about a curtain rail.

You may. That is between the two of you and it is not mine to arrange from here, and if you never mention it again the afternoon was still a nice one and she still put the kettle on.

What moves is the sentence.

It goes down the line, and I am the one who passed it on. Eleven weeks is long enough for a sentence like that to have furnished a room, and it needs putting out, because it is a claim about inevitability and about you, and Scripture answers both.

You were redeemed from the tradition received from the fathers. That is what the verse actually says, and it is very specific, and it means the thing you have been carrying since a kitchen in the nineteen fifties has already been paid off.

Four words came out once in seventy years. That is not a line. That is a residue in a woman who has spent a lifetime not saying it.

You are redeemed from the tradition received from your fathers, and the redeeming was not done with silver or gold. Scripture names the inheritance specifically rather than sin in general, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applied it to a woman of seventy in a kitchen in March.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, at ordinary speaking volume, in your own kitchen. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a woman apologizing to the air. It is an ambassador saying out loud what her King has already said, and however He answers and whatever He does from here is His and it is good.

  1. Inherited sharpness, you are a manner handed down in a kitchen and you are not a family name. The word of God says I was redeemed from the vain conversation received by tradition from my fathers, and the redeeming was not done with silver or gold.
  2. Sentence that says it goes down the line, in the name of Jesus you are evicted from this house after eleven weeks. The Holy Spirit is the one who applied that redemption to me, and a thing that travels by repetition is a thing I have already interrupted several thousand times.
  3. Lord, You paid to get me out from under four words my mother never chose either, and Your word says the redemption was from what was handed down. I am not a line and I am not a carrier, I am redeemed, and I am standing in my own kitchen today with my hands open.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
