The Water MissedIsaiah 55:1

The Friend Who Went In First

This message is for the weekend your closest friend went into the water, and the eleven years since in which you have never once brought your own name up

He was late, which was funny, because it was his own day.

Kamil had been the sort of friend who was late to everything for the whole of the eighteen years they had known each other, and he was late to this too, coming in through the side door with his hair still wet from the shower he had taken at home for no reason anybody could explain, and a plastic bag with a towel in it that his sister had packed for him.

The room was full. Somebody's aunt had brought food for far more people than were there, which is its own kind of blessing, and the smell of it was in the room the whole time, warm bread and lemon and something with cinnamon in it, so that afterwards he could never think about that morning without also smelling that table.

He sat in the second row.

Not the front, where Kamil's family were, and not the back, where you go if you are thinking about leaving. The second row, which is the row for people who belong here and are not the reason anybody came.

And it was good. He wants to be clear about that, even now, eleven years later. He was glad. He had prayed for that man for six years and he meant every word of the glad. When Kamil came up out of that water with his face doing something none of them had ever seen it do, he was on his feet with everybody else, and there were tears on his own face, and none of them were sad ones.

It was on the drive back that the other thing happened, and it was so small he almost did not notice it.

His wife said, in the ordinary way you say things in a car, "That was lovely. Did you ever do that?"

And he said, "Mm."

That was it. That was the whole thing. One syllable, in traffic, at about eleven in the morning, and then they talked about lunch.

Eleven years. Four house moves, two more children, one funeral, a great many meals at a great many tables, and in all that time his own name has never once come up in that particular conversation. Not because anybody refused it. Because he has been quietly steering the car around it for eleven years, the way you learn to drive around a pothole on your own street without ever thinking about it, until the swerve is just how you drive.

The Friend Who Went In First

What the second row is actually for

I am not going to ask you about the eleven years.

I want to say that plainly at the top, because you have probably been braced for it since the first paragraph, and being braced is not a posture anybody receives anything in. There is no audit here. Nobody is going to make you account for the syllable in the car. I am not interested in the eleven years and God is not building a case out of them.

What I am interested in is what you think the second row means.

Because here is the thing about that row. You did not sit there by accident and you did not sit there because somebody put you there. You chose it, the way people choose it every week in every room, and the choosing said something you have never said out loud: I belong in this house, and I am not the reason anybody came.

Half of that sentence is true and it is glorious. The other half you invented.

So hear this, and let me speak it over you rather than explain it to you. You are welcome at the front of that room. Not eventually, not once something is arranged, not after somebody has had a word with you. Now, dry, in the second row, with the towel that was never yours in a bag that was never packed for you. That is not my opinion of you. It is what God Himself has said, and His invitation has never once had a line in it. The Holy Spirit in you is the reason a shout from a market twenty-seven centuries ago is arriving in your chest this morning.

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.Isaiah 55:1

Read who that is addressed to. Not the ones who arrived early. Not the ones with something to bring. Everyone who is thirsty, which is a category you qualify for by being thirsty, and there is no second condition anywhere in the sentence.

And notice that it is a shout. Ho. It is the noise a man makes in a market when he wants to be heard over other noise, and God chose that noise, because He knew exactly how much other noise would be in the room by the time this reached you.

Now, that verse is not doing this on its own, and I do not want you to think the sentence is a spell. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a word off a page and into a person, and He is the reason a line written twenty-seven centuries ago can arrive in your chest this morning smelling of cinnamon and lemon. You have His Spirit in you already, and that is why this is landing. Not because I have said it well. Because He is saying it, and He has been saying it for eleven years in a car.

Let me tell you what I think happened on that drive.

You heard a real question, asked with real love, in an entirely ordinary voice, and something in you decided in less than a second that answering it honestly would cost more than the swerve. So you swerved. And the swerve worked, which is the trouble, because a thing that works gets repeated, and eleven years later the swerve has become a road.

I want to name the fear under it, because I think you would be embarrassed to say it out loud. It is not that anybody would think less of you. You know these people. It is that saying it out loud would make it a thing that is now outstanding, and you have preferred it as a thing that is merely unmentioned. Unmentioned costs nothing. Outstanding has a shape, and it sits in the room, and someone might follow it up.

So here is what I will not do. I will not follow it up. Nothing on this page is going to ask you to arrange anything, and when you close it you will owe nobody a phone call.

And here is what I will do instead, because it is the thing that actually matters. You are not a man with an item outstanding. You are a son at his Father's table, and you were a son at his Father's table on the drive home, in traffic, in the middle of the swerve. God said that over you, not I, and the same Spirit who is making these words warm to you right now is the deposit He put in you as the proof of it.

That table with the aunt's food on it, the one you can still smell. You have been thinking of yourself as a guest at it. You are not a guest. You have a place at that table that was set before you walked in, and Scripture is what says so, and the Spirit is what makes it true in you rather than merely true in general.

The breakthrough

So this is the turn, and it is small, the way the swerve was small.

You have been carrying a private status. Not a sin, not a wound, just a status, filed under not yet and reviewed once every few years when somebody's baptism comes round. The status is what has to go. Not the eleven years, which are not the problem and never were.

You are going to hold your hands under running water in a minute, and I want to be exact about what that is and is not. It is not a substitute for anything and it is not an arrangement. It is water on your skin while you say out loud what has been true since long before Kamil's sister packed a towel.

That is all. And it is enough, because the thing being settled here is not an event. It is a standing.

You are a son at that table now, not a man with an item outstanding. Scripture says everyone who thirsts may come and puts no line in the sentence, and the Holy Spirit in you is God's own deposit that the place was set before you walked in.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, in your own voice, at the volume you would use to ask for the salt. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a man hoping something is true. It is an ambassador saying out loud what his King has already said, and however He answers and whatever He does in you from here is His and it is good.

  1. Second row, you are a good seat and you are not my ceiling. God shouted His invitation to everyone who is thirsty and put no line and no price in the sentence, so I am not sitting here waiting to be told I am allowed to be here.
  2. Fear of having something outstanding, you have driven this car for eleven years and you are not driving it now. In the name of Jesus I put you out of this house, because the Holy Spirit in me is God's own deposit and a deposit is not a debt.
  3. Lord, You set a place for me at Your table before I ever walked into the room, and Your word says everyone who thirsts may come. My name is on that chair today, dry as I am, and I am sitting down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
